OSWALD, Irene (Nee Lutz)

October 4, 1947 – January 3, 2024

With profound sadness, family and friends of Irene (Lutz) Oswald, wife of Severino Oswald, announce her passing at the Barrie Memorial Hospital in Ormstown where she received care, kindness and compassion.

Irene was a native of Zurich (Switzerland) one of 8 sisters and brothers.  Irene pursued the good life in Switzerland, which included working at a hotel and restaurant in St-Moritz where she met her husband Severino, a banker.  In 1987, Irene at age 38 immigrated with her husband to the Huntingdon area.  Their objective was to have a rural life outside a small town.

To this objective the couple purchased a farm in Elgin and Huntingdon’s Le 45 Restaurant.  Specializing in Swiss and European cuisine, Irene and her husband took over the restaurant and for over 20 years created a legend of fine dining that drew a large and loyal clientele.  Retiring in April 2007, Irene enjoyed her Elgin home, country pursuits such as apple-picking with her friends at Waller Farms and seeking out and encouraging artisanal producers in the Chateauguay Valley.
