Passenger seriously injured in car accident
Emergency services were called to the scene of an accident on Highway 138 in Très-Saint-Sacrement around 8:30 p.m. on August 6. According to a report by Le Journal Saint-François, witnesses recalled seeing a sedan travelling at a very high speed on Highway 138.
Nicholas Scholtus, a spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec, noted that according to initial information, the driver passed another vehicle before losing control of his car while approaching a curve. “The sedan rolled over before ending up in the ditch,” he reports. When police arrived, the passenger, a 33-year-old man from Sainte-Martine, was lying on the ground with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The driver, a 23-year-old man also from Sainte-Martine, suffered minor injuries.
The road was closed until about 5 a.m. to allow investigators to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident. The driver could face charges of dangerous driving causing bodily harm. (Paula Dayan-Perez – Le Journal Saint-François, translated by SR)
Big fines for speeding in the Haut-Saint-Laurent
Police officers from the Sûreté du Québec’s Haut-Saint-Laurent station have conducted several speeding operations in recent days. During the afternoon of August 7, officers issued a $879 ticket and 10 demerit points to a driver in his twenties who was driving in 105 km/h in a 50 km/h zone on Route 209 in Franklin.
A driver in his forties was pulled over during the afternoon of August 4 while driving at 132 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the Chemin des Prairies in Saint-Anicet. The man received 10 demerit points as well as an $816 ticket.
On July 30, a driver in his thirties received a $1,395 fine and 14 demerit points for driving at 160 kilometres per hour in a 90 km/h zone on Highway 138 in Ormstown.
On July 21, at 8:25 a.m., officers fined a motorist $879 and 10 demerit points on Route 138 in Très-Saint-Sacrement for driving at 146 km/h in a 90 km/h zone.
The driver’s licenses of all the above drivers were suspended for seven days. (SR)
