A police surveillance operation involving the Sûreté du Québec’s Contraband Investigation Service, as well as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police including officers from the MRC du Haut-Saint-Laurent and MRC de Beauharnois-Salaberry stations, resulted in the arrest of two snowmobilers and the seizure of approximately 1,000 kilograms of contraband tobacco in Saint-Anicet on Feb. 25.
Three snowmobiles pulling toboggans were intercepted by police on trails near Route 132 and the Chemin Neuf. One suspect was arrested at the scene, while one fled on foot and another by snowmobile. A second suspect was eventually arrested after a police search. Both were released on a promise to appear in court with conditions. They may face charges under the Tobacco Tax Act and the Criminal Code. The third suspect was not located.
The three individuals are alleged to be involved in the smuggling and sale of contraband tobacco. During the operation, police seized approximately 1,000 kilograms of tobacco, as well as the three snowmobiles and three toboggans.
