S.A.B.E.C. is looking for new volunteers

The majority of you know S.A.B.E.C.  For those who don’t, S.A.B.E.C. is a non-profit organization, composed of volunteers whose mission is to accompany and provide medical transport for citizens of all ages residing in the MRC du Haut-Saint-Laurent.

If you must travel for a medical appointment and you are not able to go yourself or with friends or family, a volunteer from S.A.B.E.C. is ideal to help you.  For a fee that varies according to the distance travelled, the volunteer will bring you to your destination, and will bring you back as soon as you are finished, without unnecessary waiting.

S.A.B.E.C.’s main source of funds is the Centre intégré de santé et de services sociaux – Montérégie Ouest (CISSSMO) through the Programme de soutien aux organisme communautaire (PSOC).  This subsidy covers most of our administrative expenses, salaries, rent, and operations.

All donations, including those from municipalities, organizations, and individuals, are used to pay part of the transportation costs.  The amounts allocated to volunteers are paid in part by the clients, and the difference is paid by S.A.B.E.C.  The more grants and donations we have, the lower the amount to be paid by customers.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused us to lose a lot of volunteers, and, in addition, our volunteers are aging in the same way as the rest of the population.  Our dispatchers are working miracles to be able to provide transportation to all customers who request it.  Rarely have we had to refuse a transport.

S.A.B.E.C.’s volunteers are its greatest asset. If you are interested in helping, if you have availability, a vehicle, and a valid driver’s licence, you are the person we are looking for.  Simply call S.A.B.E.C. at 450-264-1131 or 1-866-764-1131 and we will explain how to become a volunteer.

We reimburse our volunteers’ expenses at a rate of 50 cents per kilometre.  We also cover meal expenses up to $15 per meal (conditions apply).  We accept donations – monetary as well as volunteer hours – all year long.

Isabelle Woods, director general, S.A.B.E.C.
