STORY, Barbara

October 15, 1955 – September 12, 2022

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved mother and sister, Barbara Story, in Ormstown, Quebec, on September 12, 2022, at the age of 66. One of eight siblings born to the late Kenneth Story and Noreen Story, née Ryan, she grew up in Ormstown. She is survived by her two sons, Jason and Damian D’Aoust, and five sisters: Donna Story, Bobbie Williams, Gayle Davis, Lee Story, and Gerrie Plaizier.  Barbara was a 5-foot dynamo who had kept a childlike capacity for wonder and amazement. She was enthusiastic about motorcycling, which she had taken up in her late teens and, after a hiatus of a few decades, returned to later in life. She loved the feeling of the open road and rides on her Harley were a source of renewal. She also enjoyed dancing, travelling, gardening, and reading.

Our mother had retired in Ormstown after having lived in Saint-Louis-de-Gonzague for almost 25 years. She had worked at the Caisse Populaire, first in Ormstown, then in Howick, for nearly 30 years. The best part of her job was being with people. She enjoyed helping customers, hoping to have made a difference in their day. After retiring, she wanted to continue being of service to people; she had been a waitress in a restaurant in town and was volunteering at the Catholic church in Huntingdon. She often spoke fondly of people she met at work or had gone to school with. She was happy to be living in her hometown again.  She also took care of and visited with the elderly of her community, women whom she had known all her life, namely Genevieve Glover (her grade-school teacher), Ruth Tannahill (a longtime friend), and Helen Smith (her next-door neighbour). Our mother had barely started exploring her retirement when she was suddenly taken from us. While we don’t know for certain how she would have remained involved in her community, we do know that the people of Ormstown and of Huntingdon would have been a huge part of her life.

Visitation was held at the funeral home on Monday, September 19, 2022, and a private interment will be held at a later date.

Arrangements entrusted to McGerrigle Funeral Home inc., Ormstown Qc.
