Virtual fiddle workshop a success

On Saturday, April 25, nine beginner fiddle students joined teacher Laura Risk for an afternoon workshop on the online platform Zoom. Students were from both Quebec and Ontario, with three Chateauguay Valley residents participating. The event was co-hosted by Brysonville Revisited and the Quebec Anglophone Heritage Network as part of the latter’s province-wide project A Different Tune: Musical Heritage in English-Speaking Quebec. Laura Risk is a generous and patient teacher and it was an afternoon of smiles, learning, and a sense of accomplishment. Local fiddler John Wilson and pianist Connie McClintock performed for the students during the intermission, playing tunes from the Valley’s barn dance era and providing a sense of the music’s history in the region. Several students commented that this had been a much-needed chance to reconnect with music since the COVID-19 crisis began in mid-March. If you or anyone you know would be interested in participating in a similar beginner’s fiddle workshop, please contact Bruce Barr (905-984-1316) or Glenn Patterson (info@adifferenttune.blog). We are planning a second and final workshop for the Chateauguay Valley community in the coming months.
