The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation (SLSMC) has good news for commuters who rely on the Larocque Bridge. The corporation announced on Tuesday that the bridge, which links Salaberry-de-Valleyfield with Saint-Stanislas-de-Kostka, will reopen to traffic approximately three weeks ahead of schedule as of 6 a.m. on February 28. According to a press release issued by the SLSMC on February 20, several favourable factors played a part in the decision to open the bridge earlier than planned. These include the mild weather conditions experienced in recent weeks, combined with the expertise developed by the contractor who completed similar work to replace the counterweight cables installed on the Saint-Louis-de-Gonzague bridge at this time last year. Planned maintenance work on the Larocque bridge was also carried out simultaneously with the work being done to replace the cables. In the statement, the SLSMC recognized all the local stakeholders, groups, organizations, and emergency services who worked closely together to minimise the impact of the bridge closure on the community. The corporation thanked the region's population as well for their patience and understanding throughout this period of work. Along with the opening of the bridge, the Parc des Bâtisseurs parking lot next to the structure in Valleyfield, which is currently being used to store equipment, will also become available as of next Wednesday.
