The Betty Riel Foundation will start the year with a $25,000 donation, after its founder and namesake was chosen as the grand prize winner of the 2024 Kubota and Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Community Hero contest in December.
Riel was nominated by Sharon Thurston. She won the contest following a nation-wide public vote online. The funds will be used by the foundation to continue providing free medical transport for cancer patients in the Haut-Saint-Laurent.
Two other finalists will receive $5,000 donations to the charities of their choice. All three winners will also be celebrated with a CHL game night in their honour. (SR)
