Peter Finlayson, Ormstown Weatherman
The first week of August was right on the button for average temperature, settling in at 20.1° C. The normal for the month is 20.2° C, but since the daily average temperature usually declines as the month progresses, we’ll need some warm days to maintain the average.
And speaking of warm days, the coming week will be much warmer than normal, including a couple of days with extreme heat warnings.
Precipitation for the past week was pretty much non-existent, with only 1 mm of rain in Ormstown, a few millimetres in areas to the east and zero rainfall recorded in locations to the west and north.
Heat units (CHU) were also right on the mark, with 170 CHU recorded for the week, while 768 CHU is the norm, bringing the season-to-date total to 2074 CHU, with normal being 2032 CHU by this time of the growing season, which started on May 10th.
The blueberry season is continuing in good shape, as are the field vegetables – peas, beans and peppers – the sweet corn is abundant and amazing, and there are early season apples on the market – Vista Bella, Lodi, Melba and Jersey Mac.
