Police report: SQ reports 60 per cent increase in accidents in the Montérégie

The Sûreté du Québec de la Montérégie reports that a total of 74 accidents resulting in injury occurred during the recent construction holiday, an increase of 60 per cent over last year’s total. This number is in addition to a fatal collision that occurred between July 16 and August 1.

Last year, only 46 accidents with injury were reported. The Sûreté du Québec de la Montérégie was very present on area roads, issuing 2,427 tickets and making 34 arrests for impaired driving.

Province-wide, a total of 532 accidents resulting in injury were recorded compared to 510 over the same period last year. There were 11 fatal collisions throughout the region covered by the provincial police compared with nine last year. Speed, distracted driving, and impaired driving remain the three main causes of such collisions.

The SQ issued 19,983 tickets for traffic violations, including 11,854 for speed related infractions. Just under 1170 roadside checks were conducted on Quebec roads over the two weeks. Of the 405 drivers subjected to a screening device or movement coordination tests, 313 were arrested for impaired driving.

The SQ is warning drivers to remain cautious for the remainder of the summer vacation.
