The Huntingdon Learning Centre (HLC) has recently launched a volunteer-run program offering personalized computer workshops for community members. These free sessions are “designed to help participants develop their computer skills. The workshops take place in an interactive format, where participants can ask specific questions and receive explanations on a variety of topics,” explains Renée Guernon, the director of the HLC. These topics range from checking emails to navigating Facebook Marketplace, and many things in between.
Guernon says they hope to create a friendly and accessible learning space where participants can gain confidence when engaging with technology. “We decided to organize these workshops in response to a growing need for technological assistance within the community. Many people have difficulties with digital tools, and these workshops aim to help them overcome these obstacles,” says Guernon.
Having these skills can make life more convenient, like knowing how to shop online or chat with friends; but mastering them can help in even more important ways. “They also open doors on the job market, as many professions require a certain mastery of technological tools,” says Guernon. “Ultimately, these skills contribute to the autonomy and social integration of individuals.”
Participants in this program have had an overwhelmingly positive response. “Many feel grateful to have access to this type of support,” Guernon says.
Workshops like this help to foster a sense of community amongst the participants, as they have the chance to work and learn together. Guernon highlights the hard work of her volunteers who ensure these sorts of projects can continue.
