Dear Editor,
I was disappointed to see a recent online exchange involving relatives of a municipal election candidate. A resident had posted a simple, innocuous comment about the candidate’s stated values, yet the candidate’s family member responded with derogatory remarks and even repeated misinformation and vitriolic rumours about the individual.
While it’s understandable that family members want to show support for their loved one, such behaviour does a candidate no favours. It can, rather, damage public perception and cast doubt on the candidate’s judgment and sense of fairness — even if they were not personally involved.
Candidates are often judged not only by their own actions but also by the tone and conduct of those who speak on their behalf. It would serve any campaign well to remind family and supporters that respect and accuracy matter, both online and in person. Healthy political discussion depends on civility, truth, and a willingness to listen — qualities our community deserves from everyone engaged in public life.
Sincerely,
C. Poupart
