The new school year has started and CVR students are already back to school life.
Many sports have begun with tryouts and practices. The field hockey, fall rugby, soccer, cross-country, and football teams are getting ready for upcoming tournaments and games, practicing outside during the last few weeks of warm weather.
The senior football team, coached by Mr. Furey, began their season with an opening game against Lower Canada College (LCC). Though this game didn’t end in a win, the score being 12-6 for LCC, the following game against École secondaire St-Laurent was much more successful. The Spartans won 50-13 with a last-minute field goal made by Isaac Dumas. Emerick Iverson, Liam Renaud, and Jonathan Guion also played a great game, and Wesley Zawislack, Ronan Ednie, and William Dupont really shone defensively.
Mr. Furey hopes that the team will make the playoffs and win a championship for CVR, as well as continue to improve and progress as they have been doing since the season began. He also invites everyone to come watch their home games and cheer on the Spartans.
Leadership also began organizing activities right away. They put together different events and theme days for Spirit Week which will take place in October. The students also worked on making plans for a Halloween dance on October 25.
One of Leadership’s biggest projects for this month was the Terry Fox Run. This annual seven-kilometre run isn’t always easy to coordinate; however, the 20 students who organized it did not disappoint.
Leadership students stood at every kilometre holding up signs of encouragement, offering high fives and a refreshing spray of water. But most of all, this run is organized to raise awareness about cancer.
Victoria Godfree and Lily Rose Kennedy, two of the driving forces behind the run, said that they really wanted to highlight the lives lost and those who are currently fighting cancer. The girls said that they loved to see the Spartan spirit and how involved all the students were. Even the football team, who had a game that afternoon, led a warm-up for the runners, cheering students on as they started the race.
The team also got together and donated $321 to Gerry McAdam and Eve-Marie Nicole, two CVR students who are battling cancer. Gerry began the race, running with a blue and white CVR flag while the whole school followed behind. Students wore a sticker that said who they were running for, and leadership wrote Gerry’s name on every single one, leaving room for students to write any other names that they wanted.
The fundraising goal for this year for cancer research was $4,000. To help reach this goal, there will be a bake sale at lunch in the beginning of October and all the proceeds will also go to cancer research.
